Unimportant Tuesday Post

Hello all,

Just dropping in to inform you that unfortunately, it is August 16th. Perhaps this doesn't mean anything to anyone else, but here at Connecting Now it means that we have officially not qualified for the Amazing Race.

Sad but true.
Perhaps dealing with this blow would be easier for me, personally if I were off in some beautiful West Coast city, living the high life, with a bunch of friends. I can only speculate, but it is possible.

Moving along, I'd like to address one of the later comments on Friday's blog:
"Hi Maddie,

You said "Lame-sauce", so I guess you might be the right person to ask:

What's a ROFLcopter?

- Neil"

Neil, I'm glad you asked. I'm not one to toss around ROFLcopter on a regular basis, but here's what I can tell you:

Of course, as I'm sure you gathered, the prefix, 'ROFL' stands for 'rolling on the floor laughing'. This is an extremely common acronym that was derived to be the updated version of the colloquial 'LOL,' or, 'laughing out loud'.

My research indicates that 'copter' was tacked onto the end by that influential group that our society (in all seriousness) could not function without: nerds.

Yes, apparently, the popular online game Warcraft III has a thingy in it, where if the players are trying to be somehow funny during it, they'll fly a 'gyrocopter', or whatever that means. But because whatever this thing is, is somehow funny, people ROFL over these gyrocopters. So, add the ROFL to the copter, drop the gyro and you get: ROFLcopter!

I don't know, frankly, this could be wrong, I got too bored and confused reading the definition on Urban Dictionary to finish.

However, in my personal experience, ROFLcopter is just a word you can sling around if you're feeling a little silly. I mean think about it, if you were on a helicopter, you'd probably find something to laugh about. And as long as you were not the pilot, you could find a way to roll on the floor while you did it. Depending on the model of your specific unit.

Some words that are often used in close association with ROFLcopter include:
-Lollerskates (LOL, plus, lerskates)
-Biffles (That's instead of saying "we're BFFs", say "we're biffles."
-Lulz (A plural of LOL. Usually the reason why you did something really funny. "I did it for the Lulz.")

Hope this clears things up, Neil.

See allz of youz tomorrowz.
kthxbai,
Madz

  5. Aww! Maddie,I'm disappointed. I so wanted to see you and your mom charm the world. I betcha if the producers had any idea how really gifted and funny you both are, you'd be at the top of their list. Also, if they really knew how much greater their audience would be, they'd rethink it. Thanks for the vocabulary education! I'm missing Lisa, but I hope she's having lots of fun.

  6. Dear Maddie,

Thank you so much for the comprehensive research and clear explanation.

I actually asked this question and then promptly left this land of technology for a 3-week internet hiatus. I swapped the laptop at the end of the interwebs for mountains and lakes and far secluded places.

In this free land I had a lot of time for thinking and gave the ROFL-copter issue a thorough peruse. I actually came to the conclusion that a ROFL-copter referred to when something was _so_ funny that you fell to the floor LOL-ing, holding your tummy and then swivelling on the carpeted area using your legs to propel yourself in tight concentric circles (much like a breakdancing wing-ed thing on the wrong end of fly-spray).

Thus, imagine my surprise when I read the actual definition (from the Urban Dictionary no less)!

Nevertheless, I think I may try saying “Rofl-copter” myself at one point, because my own mental image of twirling teenagers caused me to act out another abbreviation: MMS – made me smile.

I think I’ve got the hang of this young-speak now.

    - Neil
