A CarNUNdrum--Zoom, Zoom!

Love the Karmann Ghia!
Dear MikChiks,
I've not been shopping for a vehicle for fun in a while, but it looks like the day is coming--really soon--when I get to search for that perfect car. I need something good on gas, nice looking, dependable (but not for old people if you know what I mean). NO MORE MINIVAN, preferably not older than 5 years old, and economical (did I say that already?).  It will mainly be my car, but it should be able to fit four.

Anyway, I don't suppose this is a coNUNdrum, but I would like some ideas on what chariots people are liking out there.

Girl Who's Almost in the Market

Dear Auto Girl!
Are you kidding?—you've brought us our first carnundrum! Zoom! Zoom! Seriously, there are some nifty choices on lots these days.  Because you said  you wanted something "fun," we're not looking at American vs. Foreign, or Other Practical Matters besides Gas Mileage.  We also aren't going off the Deep End with something like a Porshe--which we imagine would be fun.  Really Fun.  And we can't wait to see what the Driving Readers out there consider to be fun, either.

So here is what Madeline considers fun.
Unfortunately, the VW Cabriolet isn't made anymore.  But, no need to cry--Lexus (and Audi) makes them!  Cabriolet, interestingly enough, means "chariot".  Coincidence?  Probably.  Especially since we just realized that Cabriolet means "carriage" and not "chariot".  We feel side-swiped.  Anyhoo--here is the Lexus Cabriolet.  Nice, eh?

And here is a car Lisa considers fun.
The Kia Soul gets about 30 mpg, though the hybrid that is due to come out soon will get 48! The car is reasonably priced $13,000-$17,000, but you won't find a 5-year-old one—they haven't been around that long.

We realize that in all likelihood, we have been of no real help, and for that we apologize.  On the other hand, we have come up with an idea that hearkens back to the Purse-onality Quiz--The Car Quiz!

*Woot* or perhaps *Toot* would be more appropriate!!!!

Send us a picture of the car you drive.  Then we'll do a matching game next week—to see if we (as in everyone) can guess/figure out who drives what car.  Prizes will be awarded!

As for Auto Girl, she needs your help, Readers!  What kind of Fun Car that meets her other requirements do you recommend?

Seriously.

Waiting to Hear,
Lisa and Maddie

  1. Oooh, ho, ho! I was in her shoes a few years back, shopping for my little dream car.... the sweet, cute, fun and zippy PT Cruiser. I had my list of specs.... It had to be RED, with a sun roof, automatic, and under $10,000. Well, it took me about a week of SERIOUS shopping but I did find all that and more (heated seats, great stereo). It was only 4 years old, got great gas mileage and I looked darn cute in it. ;) I drove that car everywhere and never thrilled to slip behind the wheel. I had it for 5 years and then..... engine trouble..... and one problem led to the next so I sold it to my mechanic.... (that's the short version) I now drive a sporty RED Pontiac Grand Prix which is pretty zippy and nice and I am blessed to have it. (long story on car sagas in my life) Still, every time I see a PT Cruiser I feel a little *ping* in my heart for what I once had and would be thrilled to ever have again. Seriously.

  2. Thanks for the input, Songbyrd! Note to self--if someone sends in a picture of a RED Pontiac Grand Prix, you know how to match it . . .

  3. I'll not tell you what I drive (though I love it) so I can enter the contest. BUT before this car, I had a Toyota Solara that I LOVE LOVED LOVED!!! Someone at my church drives a red convertible Solara that makes my green eyes even greener when I see it in the parking lot. ;) Mine had 127,000 miles on it when I sold it - and the person I sold it too still drives it. Great, reliable car - and an older one could be had pretty reasonably.

  7. when we will finally be able to repace our mini-van, we've been eyeing cars similar to the Kia Sportage, although it probably only gets about same gas mileage as the mini-van. (22 mpg)

  8. Just checked it out--reminiscent of VW bug with hints of Kia Soul--I like it! The Nissan Roadster is also one sporty little car--but pricey:(.

  9. We've had to "repace" several of our cars tickers. And this will be my last comment for a while--Maddie says I"m abusing the "reply" button.

  10. What I want to drive, I don't, but what I drive I'm happy with.
Sending you a picture. It's not the little red sports convertible I want to drive. I think hubby still remembers buying me a little red Porsche--was it my fault it went soooo fast? I think not! Now for some strange reason he refuses to discuss sports cars with me.

  11. Tickers? And tell Maddie that's what this comment set up is for. It creates a sense of community on your blog. :P

  14. I like . . . I like.

  15. My practical side (cough, husband, cough) says Almost Girl should go for a Corolla (great on gas, reasonably priced) or a Civic (ditto on gas, slightly more expensive than the Toyota). But my fun loving side screams Mini Cooper!!!!!!! Um, except it would be tight with four peeps. And there's no way any dogs, luggage or groceries are fitting in that car for a road trip. But picture that hot mama in bright orange or a cool blue and we're having the drive of our lives.

I honestly don't know what you mean about cars for old people. Like Buicks or something??? Will someone please enlighten me?

    CarNUNdrum... snicker.
